These treacle-glazed waffle treats are delightful, soft, and filled with a rich caramel-like filling, perfect for any time of day.
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup melted butter
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 large egg
1 packet yeast
1/2 cup treacle
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Method
In a large bowl, mix together flour, melted butter, white sugar, milk, egg, and yeast until well combined. Knead the mixture until it becomes smooth and elastic, then cover with plastic wrap and let it rise for about 45 minutes.
In a small saucepan, combine treacle, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon. Warm over medium heat, stirring constantly for about 3 to 5 minutes until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
After the dough has risen, knead it briefly and divide it into small balls, each approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter, adjusting for your waffle iron's size.
Place one dough ball in the preheated waffle iron and cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute until golden brown and steaming stops. Carefully remove it with a spatula and use a round cutter to trim the edges for a clean shape. While still warm, slice the waffle in half horizontally, spread 1 to 2 tablespoons of the treacle filling on one half, and press the other half on top to create a delicious sandwich. Continue with the remaining dough.
