Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • a pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/2 teaspoon butter flavoring

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is fluffy. Add in eggs and vanilla extract, continuing to mix until well combined.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and a dash of salt. Gradually fold this dry mixture into the butter and sugar blend, stirring with a strong spoon until a dough forms. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to approximately 1/4 inch thick. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters and place them 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
  4. Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 4 to 6 minutes, or until they are slightly golden around the edges. Once out of the oven, let them cool completely on wire racks.
  5. For the frosting, beat together shortening, powdered sugar, a splash of water, a pinch of salt, vanilla extract, and a hint of butter flavoring in a clean bowl until the mixture is light and airy. Use this frosting to decorate the cooled cookies.
