Sicilian Tuna Treat

This Sicilian Tuna Treat features perfectly seared tuna steaks complemented by sweet caramelized onions in a tangy sauce, making it a delightful main course.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 medium onions
  • 2 pieces tuna steaks
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Method

  1. Heat a robust skillet over medium flame and pour in a drizzle of olive oil. Toss in diced onions and sauté until they soften and become translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to stir the onions, allowing them to caramelize to a deep brown hue, which will take around 15 to 20 minutes. Once they are beautifully golden, transfer the onions to a separate plate.
  3. Raise the heat to medium-high in the same skillet and add the tuna steaks. Sear each side for about 2 minutes until a golden crust forms. Remove the steaks and place them on a warm serving platter.
  4. In the skillet, combine vinegar and sugar, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Return the sautéed onions to the skillet and let the mixture simmer until it thickens slightly, for about 5 minutes.
  5. Place the tuna steaks back into the skillet, allowing them to soak up the flavorful sauce for an additional 3 to 5 minutes. Serve them warm, generously drizzled with the onion and sauce blend.
