Ingredients

  • 1 cup cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup cup shortening
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cup milk
  • 1/4 cup cup margarine

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C) and prepare an 8x8-inch baking dish by greasing it.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Then, mix in the eggs and vanilla extract until fully blended.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Carefully fold in the chopped apples and walnuts until evenly mixed.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, smoothing the top with a spatula.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes.
  6. For the topping, heat brown sugar, milk, and margarine in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves and the margarine melts.
