Ingredients

  • 1 cup split peas
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 piece ham bone
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 teaspoon marjoram
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • to taste none salt
  • 2 stalks celery

Method

  1. Start by placing split peas and water in a large soup pot over medium heat, letting it boil for 2 minutes. Then, remove from heat and allow to rest for 1 hour.
  2. Once cooled, add the ham bone, onion, marjoram, thyme, garlic powder, and salt to the peas in the pot. Return it to medium heat and bring to a boil again.
  3. After reaching a boil, lower the heat to a gentle simmer, cover the pot, and let it cook for 2 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  4. After 2 hours, carefully take out the ham bone, ensuring to extract any remaining meat. Dice the ham into small pieces and return it to the pot along with chopped celery.
  5. Dispose of the ham bone and let the soup simmer for an additional 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt as desired.
