Ingredients
1 cup warm water
2 tablespoons yeast
5.5 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk
2 large eggs
1/2 cup sugar
5 tablespoons softened butter
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup raisins
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Method
Start by pouring warm water into a large bowl and sprinkling yeast over it. Let it sit for around 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
In the same bowl, add 2 ½ cups of flour, buttermilk, eggs, 1/4 cup of sugar, softened butter, baking powder, and salt. Mix until everything is well combined. Gradually incorporate the remaining 3 cups of flour, adding half a cup at a time, and mix until the dough is soft and slightly sticky. Knead the dough on a floured surface for approximately 8 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
Divide the dough into two equal halves and roll each piece into a rectangle of 12x7 inches. Spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter on each rectangle, then sprinkle with 1/4 cup of sugar and a teaspoon of cinnamon. Roll the dough tightly from the longer side and seal the edges. Cut each roll into 12 equal portions.
Prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing them with 1/4 cup of melted butter, followed by 1/4 cup of brown sugar, half of the chopped pecans, and half of the raisins. Arrange 12 slices in each pan, leaving space between them. Cover and let the dough rise until it doubles in size, which should take about 30 to 60 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake the buns in the oven for around 30 minutes, or until they turn a lovely golden color. Once done, carefully flip the pans onto plates to release the sticky buns and serve them warm.
