These hearty Swedish meatballs are a comforting dish perfect for any dinner table, served with a rich and creamy gravy that enhances their savory flavor.
Ingredients
1/2 cup bread crumbs
1/4 cup cream
2 tablespoons butter
1 medium, diced onion
1 pound ground beef
1 pound ground pork
1 large egg
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons flour
2 1/2 cups beef broth
1/2 cup sour cream
Method
Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a small bowl, mix together the bread crumbs and cream, allowing it to rest for about 10 minutes for the crumbs to absorb the cream.
While the bread crumbs soak, melt a teaspoon of butter in a skillet and sauté the diced onion until it turns a lovely golden brown, which should take around 10 minutes. Once done, transfer the onion to a mixing bowl.
In the same mixing bowl, add ground beef, ground pork, an egg, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger. Incorporate the soaked bread crumbs and cream gently into the mixture.
In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Shape the meat mixture into balls, roughly 1 ½ tablespoons in size, and cook them in the skillet until they are browned all over, which should take about 5 minutes; they may still be slightly pink in the center.
Once browned, place the meatballs in a baking dish, pour chicken broth over them, and cover with aluminum foil.
Bake in the preheated oven until the meatballs are tender, which will take about 40 minutes. After baking, transfer the meatballs to a serving platter.
Pour the drippings from the pan into a saucepan set over medium heat and whisk in flour until the mixture is smooth.
Slowly incorporate beef broth, stirring continuously until you achieve about 2 ½ cups of gravy.
Bring the gravy to a simmer, whisking constantly until it thickens, which should take around 5 minutes.
Before serving, mix in sour cream and adjust the seasoning with additional salt and black pepper as needed. Serve the rich gravy alongside the meatballs.
