Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup mushrooms
  • 1 cup bell peppers
  • 1 medium onions
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Method

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions, sautéing until the vegetables are tender, about 5 to 7 minutes. Once done, transfer them to a plate and set aside.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, an egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well incorporated and shape into four equal patties.
  3. Raise the heat to medium-high and sear the patties in the skillet for roughly 4 minutes on each side until they're nicely browned. Transfer them to a separate plate to keep warm.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and add minced garlic to the skillet, cooking for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add marinara sauce, red wine, a dash of sugar, dried basil, and crushed red pepper flakes; stir well to combine.
  5. Return the burger patties to the skillet, ensuring they are covered with the sauce, and let them simmer for around 15 minutes.
  6. Stir occasionally, adding a little water if the sauce starts to thicken too much. After 15 minutes, uncover the skillet and fold in the reserved sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions. Heat everything together for an additional 3 to 4 minutes until warmed through.
