Ingredients

  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 piece large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Method

  1. In a double boiler, melt the chocolate chips over simmering water, stirring frequently for about 5 minutes to prevent burning. Once melted, set aside to cool.
  2. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well blended and set aside.
  4. In another bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla, mixing until just incorporated. Gradually fold in the cooled melted chocolate.
  5. Add half of the dry mixture to the chocolate batter, mixing until barely combined. Then, pour in the buttermilk and finally mix in the remaining dry ingredients until just incorporated.
  6. Spoon the cookie dough onto lined baking sheets using a medium cookie scoop, leaving about 1.5 inches between each scoop.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, until the cookies are set but still soft. Allow them to cool slightly on the baking sheets before transferring them.
  8. For the frosting, heat butter, heavy cream, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and salt in a saucepan over low heat. Whisk until the butter has melted and the mixture is smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Continue whisking on low heat until the frosting is glossy, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  9. Once the frosting is ready, remove it from the heat and drizzle 1 to 2 tablespoons over each warm cookie, using a spoon to spread it evenly. Allow the cookies to cool completely to let the frosting set before gently lifting them off the baking sheets.
