A comforting and cheesy baked macaroni dish that brings warmth and satisfaction to your table, perfect for family gatherings or a cozy dinner.
Ingredients
8 ounces elbow macaroni
3/4 cup butter
1 cup sour cream
4 ounces cream cheese
1 cup sharp Cheddar cheese
1 unit egg yolk
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 cup milk
1 cup mild Cheddar cheese
Method
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a 9x13-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add elbow macaroni and cook for about 7 minutes, stirring occasionally until it's slightly firm. Drain and transfer to a large bowl. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and mix in 1/2 cup of melted butter while the pasta is still warm.
In another bowl, blend 1/4 cup of melted butter with sour cream, cream cheese, sharp Cheddar cheese, and an egg yolk until smooth. Then, add flour, another 1/2 teaspoon of salt, cayenne pepper, and milk, mixing until you have a creamy consistency.
Spread a layer of the creamy mixture at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Fold the remaining sauce into the macaroni to ensure it's well coated, then pour the macaroni on top of the sauce layer. Finish with a generous layer of mild Cheddar cheese.
Bake for approximately 15 minutes, or until the dish is heated through and the cheese on top is bubbly and golden.
