This Caramel-Infused French Toast Casserole is a delightful combination of sweet caramel and fluffy bread, perfect for a breakfast gathering or brunch. The overnight soak ensures every bite is rich and flavorful.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup corn syrup
  • a pinch none salt
  • 12 slices bread slices
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup whole milk, brown sugar, butter, corn syrup, and a pinch of salt. Stir continuously for about 5 minutes until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes smooth. Pour this caramel syrup into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. Arrange slices of bread evenly over the caramel layer, making sure they fit snugly.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 1/2 cups of milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Pour this mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are well soaked. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight to enhance the flavors.
  5. When ready to bake, remove the dish from the fridge and uncover it. In a small bowl, mix white sugar with cinnamon and sprinkle it generously over the casserole.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 25 to 30 minutes until the casserole is set and the egg mixture is cooked through. As it cools, it will develop a delicious syrupy texture.
